Internal Wall Insulation

What is Internal Wall Insulation?

Internal wall insulation, otherwise known as solid wall insulation, involves insulating the interior surface of a building’s exterior walls to improve its overall thermal efficiency. In this process, the insulation board is installed on the walls and covered with a vapour barrier layer and plasterboard.

Once installed, the insulation boards offer a thermal barrier that reduces the heat transfer through the inner and outer walls. During the winter, the heat is trapped inside the house, keeping it warm and minimising the need to use a heating system again and again. Similarly,  during the summertime, it prevents outside heat from entering the house, keeping it cool for as long as possible.

However, it’s important to know that this type of insulation is only suitable for certain types of homes where external wall insulation is not feasible. If you own an old property built with solid walls, you can use your free wall insulation grant to invest in internal wall insulation.

Why Insulate Internal Walls?

Whether you are retrofitting an old building or constructing a new one, your home should be energy efficient and consume less energy and resources. This will not only help you reduce your carbon emissions but also will save you hundreds of pounds on energy bills every year. While these are only a couple of benefits of installing internal wall insulation, there are a few more you should know about if you are considering this option.

Thermal Comfort

Structural Protection

Noise Reduction

Improved Health

Property Value

Regulatory Compliance

How Much Does Internal Wall Insulation Cost?

The cost of installing or retrofitting internal wall insulation varies from property to property based on factors such as the thickness of the walls, insulation type, the property’s size, and age. However, the most commonly used cost for insulation is between £40 and £50/m2. If a new stud wall is built, the cost can reach as high as £100/m2. The cost can be high, so be sure to check your eligibility for a free wall insulation grant and get funds from the government to cover the project cost.
